Illustrated Journal #1

The image pictured below is titled Edward Scissorhands and was created by director and producer Tim Burton when he was in high school. For those who have seen any of his films , such as Corpse Bride or The Nightmare Before Christmas, will instantly recognize his signature style after viewing the image below. Through the use of solid straight lines and sharp edges, Tim is able to create a stylized steam-punk look to the characters clothing. Using the same jagged line technique also allows him to create unordinary styles of hair. Through the use of cross-hatching Tim darkened an oval shaped region around the small circular eyes; creating a sense of shallow depth as well as emptiness. I’ve been a fan of Tim’s work ever since I first saw The Nightmare Before Christmas at around age 6. His style is most defiantly one that inspires me the most as well as gives me what I like to call an “artistic high”.
